The ‘Hamsa’ is an ancient apotropaic Middle Eastern symbol that transcends cultural boundaries, symbolizing, among other things, the Eye of Thoth, the Hand of Venus, the Hand of Mary, and the Hand of Fatima. The word “hamsa” originates from the Hebrew word “hamesh,” meaning five. It represents protection from the ‘Ayin Ha’ra’ or the evil eye, to ward off illness, death, malevolent individuals, or general misfortune. Hamsa is associated with the number 5, attributed to the five fingers.

This iconic artwork originally appeared on Signs of Life, a seminal Blue Room Released compilation that defined a generation of ambient, trance, and experimental electronica. Taken by crop circle photographer Steve Alexander, Simon Ghahary transformed it to emphasizethe drama of the symbology. It captures the pulse of 1990s sound culture—vibrational geometry, cosmic language, and an invitation to step into altered states of awareness.
